Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

If your DuraFlex chimney crown is cracked, spalled, or letting water into the chase, we stock and install DuraFlex-compatible crown repair components here in Fresno, with most jobs running $425 to $850 installed depending on chase size and how much of the old crown has to come out. You’ll typically discover this problem after a heavy rain, when you notice a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, or when you’re up on the roof and see the concrete flaking away from the flue. Ruben Castellano and our crew have repaired crowns on everything from 1970s ranchers in Hoover to newer two-story builds up near Woodward Park, and the failure pattern is almost always the same: Fresno’s summer heat dries out the crown, winter rain finds the hairline crack, and the freeze-thaw cycle from our cold valley nights does the rest.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crown repair parts are sized to work with their aluminum and stainless liner systems, specifically the DuraFlex SS and DuraFlex AL series, but the crown itself is less about the liner and more about the chase top dimensions. You’ll need two measurements: the outside dimensions of the chase (the framed box that encloses the flue, usually clad in stucco, wood, or vinyl siding), and the outside diameter of the flue pipe poking through it. Most Fresno chases run 14 x 14 inches or 16 x 16 inches, with flue pipes at 6-inch or 8-inch diameter. The gotcha we see regularly: homeowners order a crown online for a “standard” 16 x 16 chase and discover their chase is actually 15 1/2 inches because the stucco was floated thin. Measure to the half inch, or let us do it before you spend money on a part that won’t fit. For OEM vs aftermarket, the genuine DuraFlex crown components are our default because the formed drip edge and pre-punched flue collars seat more cleanly than generic flat stock, but a properly fabricated 24-gauge galvanized crown with a good brake job will outlast a poorly installed OEM piece any day. The install matters more than the logo on the part.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. The crown is the umbrella over your chase. When it cracks, water travels straight down the chase and shows up where the drywall meets the chimney chase, often weeks or months after the rain that caused it.
  • Concrete crown flaking or spalling onto the roof. Fresno summers bake the crown to 140 degrees or higher, then winter rain soaks it and the freeze cycle pops the surface. You’ll find small chunks of concrete in the gutter or on the shingles below the chase.
  • Rust staining on the flue pipe or chase top flashing. That’s the telltale sign water has been pooling around the base of the flue. By the time you see rust, the crown has been failing for at least one winter season.
  • Damp smells or draft changes around the fireplace. A cracked crown lets water into the chase cavity, which can soak the insulation and create a musty smell that gets pushed into the room when you light a fire, and it also changes the way the fireplace draws.
  • Visible cracks you can see from the ground. Use binoculars. If you can see a crack from the ground, it’s already wide enough to matter, and it won’t get better on its own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full DuraFlex crown repair in Fresno typically runs $425 to $850 installed. On the low end, you’re looking at a chase with minimal damage where we can clean, prep, and apply a crown sealant system over the existing structure. On the high end, we’re removing the old crown entirely, building wooden form boards around the chase, setting a new reinforced concrete crown with a proper drip edge, and sealing everything with a high-grade elastomeric coating. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, and that price covers removal of the failed crown material, haul-away, new crown installation, and sealing around the flue collar. Every crown repair carries our written guarantee: if the repair fails within the 365-day coverage period, we come back and fix it free of charge. No prorated nonsense, no “well that’s normal wear” conversation.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things worth doing yourself, and there are things where the ladder is the most expensive part of the mistake. You can absolutely check the inside of your fireplace for water stains, check the walls near the chase for discoloration, and snap a photo from the ground with your phone zoomed in on the crown. What you shouldn’t do is climb up with a bucket of hardware-store sealant. Crown repair done wrong traps moisture inside the chase and accelerates the very damage you’re trying to stop, and most of the failures we see on second visits started as a homeowner’s “temporary patch.” We’ll come out, show you photos of exactly what’s happening up there, and give you a written price before any work is done. Call us at (559) 215-1714 and we’ll schedule a time that works, with a technician whose name and photo you’ll see before we ever ring the bell.
