Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Fresno typically runs $2,400 to $4,800 installed for a single-story home with straightforward roof access, and we stock DuraFlex-compatible liners on our trucks for most common diameters. Most homeowners discover their liner has failed during a routine sweep or inspection, when our camera shows cracks, rust-through, or separated seams they couldn’t see from the outside. If you’re seeing flaky rust at the base of your chimney, catching a whiff of smoke in rooms you don’t use often, or noticing your water heater venting oddly, the liner is where we look first.
DuraFlex makes a solid product. But it lives inside a masonry chimney in the San Joaquin Valley, where summer heat bakes the crown and winter fog creeps down the flue. Over 15 to 25 years, that combination corrodes even well-installed aluminum and stainless liners. Here’s what to know before you spend a dollar on a replacement.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex liners come in a few distinct lines, and the replacement part has to match the one you have. The most common we see in Fresno homes is the DuraFlex 316L stainless, a flexible liner used for gas and oil appliances. There’s also DuraFlex AL, an aluminum liner that was popular in the 1990s and early 2000s and is now frequently at end of life. If your home has a wood-burning fireplace or insert, you may have DuraFlex Pro, which is a heavier-wall 316Ti stainless designed for higher flue temperatures.
Alcott Chimney Fresno is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex. That means we can honestly tell you when an OEM DuraFlex replacement is worth the premium and when a professional-grade equivalent (we also work with HeatShield and Gelco products) does the same job for less. Most of the time, the right answer is a 316L stainless liner matched to your existing ID, often in 4″, 5″, or 6″ diameter for gas appliances. The compatibility gotcha people miss: you can’t just swap a 5.5″ liner for a 6″ and expect the termination cap to fit. The old cap often doesn’t seal on a different diameter, so a true replacement is liner plus cap plus connector, quoted as one price.
To identify your current liner, look for the printed label near the bottom connection, usually inside the cleanout or at the appliance collar. If the label is gone, we measure the inside diameter and photograph the condition with a camera before recommending anything.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Rust flakes or metallic debris in the cleanout. This is the classic sign. Aluminum liners in particular will shed visible oxidation as they break down, and if you’re finding what looks like thin metal confetti, the liner wall is thinning from the inside.
- A smell of exhaust or sulfur near the fireplace or water heater. When the liner cracks or separates at a seam, combustion gases can escape into the chase or wall cavity instead of venting outside. In a closed-up Fresno house in January, that’s the smell you notice first.
- Visible staining or moisture on the chimney exterior. A failed liner lets water and acidic condensation sit against the masonry from inside. You’ll see it as dark patches, efflorescence, or spalling brick, especially on the north-facing side that stays damp longer.
- Flue gases condensing unusually fast. If your water heater’s exhaust is cool enough to condense heavily inside the connector, the liner may be oversized, undersized, or holed. We regularly see this in older Fresno homes where a gas appliance was swapped but the original liner was left in place.
- Camera inspection reveals cracks, holes, or separated seams. This is the definitive diagnosis. We don’t recommend replacement on a hunch, and we shouldn’t. Every Alcott inspection includes camera footage you watch with us, so you can see the exact failure before you approve the work.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fresno, expect to pay $2,400 to $4,800 for a full DuraFlex-compatible liner replacement on a single-story home. The range exists because of three things: the liner material and diameter (4″ aluminum is cheaper than 6″ 316Ti stainless), the condition of your existing chase and termination cap, and whether roof access is straightforward or requires additional safety setup.
| Component | Typical Installed Cost |
|---|---|
| 4″ aluminum liner kit (gas appliance) | $2,400 – $3,200 |
| 5″-6″ 316L stainless liner kit | $2,800 – $3,800 |
| 6″ DuraFlex Pro (or equivalent 316Ti) for wood-burning | $3,200 – $4,800 |
| Termination cap replacement (when old cap won’t seal) | $150 – $350 |
| Chase cover repair or replacement | $300 – $700 |
Every quote is a written price before work starts. It includes the liner, cap, connector, our labor, and cleanup. It also includes a written guarantee on the repair: if the liner replacement fails within the coverage period, the second visit is free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it applies to every liner job we do in Fresno.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Look inside the cleanout at the bottom of the chimney. Run your hand along the visible connector pipe where it enters the wall. Take a photo of any label you can find on the liner, even if it’s partially unreadable. Those details help us quote over the phone.
What we don’t recommend is pulling a liner yourself. They’re long, awkward, and sharp at the edges. A liner that’s rusted through often breaks off in sections, and what’s left inside the flue can jam halfway down. The real risk is doing a partial job: if the old liner isn’t fully removed, or the new one isn’t sized correctly to the termination cap, you’ll vent exhaust into places it should never be. Carbon monoxide risk from a liner swap is real, and in Fresno’s tight older homes near the Tower District or the Fig Garden area, that’s not a risk worth taking. We remove the old liner, inspect the chase, install the replacement, and camera-verify the entire length before we pack up. Call (559) 215-1714 and tell us what you have. You’ll get a straight price, not a sales pitch.
FAQs
A 316L stainless DuraFlex liner in Fresno typically lasts 15 to 25 years, though aluminum liners often fail closer to 10 to 15 years. The Central Valley’s summer heat cycles and winter moisture are harder on liners than the mild coastal climate, so we inspect for holing sooner when a liner is past the 12-year mark. If you’re unsure of your liner’s age, call (559) 215-1714 and we’ll camera-inspect it.
Sometimes, yes, if the damage is isolated to one section and the rest of the liner is sound, though this is less common than replacement. Patch kits and short coupling sections exist for small holes, but they’re only worth doing when the surrounding metal has real life left. When the liner is rusting in multiple places or the seams are opening up, putting a patch on it is just buying a few months. We’ll show you the camera footage and let you decide with real information.
Most DuraFlex liner replacements in Fresno are done in 4 to 6 hours on site, no tarps in your living room, no multi-day project. Expect us in the morning, with the old liner out and the new one camera-verified by mid-afternoon. Roof condition and chase access can add time, but we quote the full job up front so you know what the day looks like.
We stock common DuraFlex-compatible liner sizes on our trucks, including 4″ and 5″ aluminum and 316L stainless in 6″ diameters, and can source anything else within a day through our supplier network. We also carry HeatShield and Gelco materials when a resurfacing approach fits better than a full liner swap. If you need a liner looked at today, call (559) 215-1714.
