Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Damper Repair: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
HeatShield damper repair in Fresno typically runs $275 – $520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the entire top-sealing unit. We stock HeatShield-compatible damper parts on the truck for the most common models, so in many cases we can complete the repair the same day we diagnose it. Most Fresno homeowners discover the problem on the first cold morning of fall, when they reach up to close the damper and the handle feels loose, or they notice a draft that wasn’t there last winter.
We’re an independent chimney service, not affiliated with HeatShield the manufacturer. That independence matters to you: we’re not here to sell a brand, we’re here to fix a damper with the right part at a fair price.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes two primary damper configurations we see in Fresno homes: the original top-sealing chimney cap damper, which mounts at the flue crown and seals with a silicone gasket when closed, and the throat damper retrofit that replaces a rusted cast-iron damper assembly just above the firebox. The top-sealing design is the one we’re repairing most often in this climate, because it’s exposed to Central Valley summer heat, valley fog, and rain in the same season.
Compatibility comes down to two measurements: the inside diameter of your flue liner and the depth of the flue tile collar at the crown. If you have the original HeatShield paperwork, the model number is printed on the inside of the handle or on a tag zip-tied to the cable. If not, we’ll measure it on site in under five minutes. HeatShield parts are not interchangeable with DuraFlex or Gelco damper hardware, and unlike some brands there’s no universal collar. Getting the wrong base plate is a common ordering mistake we see on DIY attempts, so we keep a caliper in the truck and verify before anything goes on the roof.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins without resistance. This usually means the cable has slipped out of the set screw at the damper plate, or the cable housing has stretched. The damper is stuck wherever it happens to be, often slightly open.
- You feel a draft even when the damper is closed. The silicone gasket on a HeatShield top-sealing unit compresses with age, especially after a few Fresno summers where attic-side roof temps top 150 degrees. A hardened gasket won’t seal, and your conditioned air goes straight up the flue.
- You can hear metallic tapping on windy nights. That’s the damper plate fluttering against the frame. The tension spring has weakened and the plate isn’t loaded against the gasket anymore. Annoying now, but it also lets air through and accelerates wear.
- The cable kinks when you close the damper. HeatShield cables run through a steel conduit, but if the conduit shifted during a wind event or was snagged during a sweep, the cable binds. You’ll feel it firm up, then suddenly slip.
- White mineral deposits crusting the damper mechanism. You see this more on Fresno homes built before 1980 where the flue wasn’t properly pointed at the crown. Moisture seeps through cracks, hits the hot damper plate, and leaves behind calcium and rust scale.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we’re seeing on HeatShield damper repairs in Fresno right now:
- Damper plate replacement with new gasket: $275 – $360 installed. Includes four stainless screws, a new compression gasket, and cable adjustment.
- Cable and conduit assembly replacement: $180 – $260 installed. Includes pull-through of the new cable and routing adjustments at the bracket.
- Full top-sealing damper replacement: $420 – $520 installed. We pull the whole unit, install a new HeatShield base plate, plate assembly, gasket, and cable, then seal the crown ring with a high-temp silicone rated for exterior chimney use.
These are flat ranges. We write the exact price down before any work starts and nothing gets added at the end. You also get our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it free. Second visit, free. No fine print rounds.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely inspect yourself: from inside the firebox, with a flashlight, look up at the damper plate. If the cable is visibly detached from the plate or the gasket is cracking and peeling, you know it needs attention. You can also run your hand along the handle path to feel for binding.
What we don’t recommend is pulling the damper plate yourself. The plate is under tension from the return spring, and if it releases while you’re on a ladder at the top of a roof access point, it can take off a fingertip. On the roof side, you’re working at the flue crown with no railings. Falls off single-story Fresno homes are still falls. If you’re even half-shrugging after reading this, call us at (559) 215-1714 and we’ll send a technician who does this with a harness and a spotter. Ruben Castellano has been on enough Fresno chimneys to tell you it’s the little damper springs that surprise people most.
FAQs
The HeatShield damper itself typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Fresno’s climate, though the gasket usually needs replacing every 5 to 7 years. The top-sealing units wear faster here than in coastal California because of the heat cycling we get between hot days and cool valley nights. If your unit is over a decade old and the gasket is hard, you’re close to a plate replacement, not just a gasket swap. Call (559) 215-1714 and we’ll tell you exactly which one you need.
Yes, and in most Fresno cases we repair the damper rather than replace it. If the plate is still flat and the hinge points aren’t worn, a new gasket and cable tension adjustment gets it sealing again. We replace the full unit when the plate has warped from heat or the hinge has slop that can’t be adjusted out. We’ll show you the old part and explain the recommendation before we touch anything.
Most HeatShield damper repairs in Fresno take 60 to 90 minutes on a dry day. The slow parts are safely placing the roof ladder and letting the sealant cure enough to hold the crown ring, which adds about 30 minutes to the actual mechanical work. If you block out two hours, we’ll be done early most visits.
We carry the common HeatShield damper plates, gaskets, cable assemblies, and mounting hardware on the truck for the models most common around Fresno. If we arrive and your unit needs a different plate size or an older revision, we can usually have it in hand in 24 to 48 hours. We’ll know as soon as we measure, and we’ll write you the price before we order anything.
