Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Fresno typically runs $275 – $540 installed, depending on flue size, roof pitch, and whether the existing mounting bracket is reusable. We stock Gelco-compatible caps and hardware on the truck, so most installations in Fresno are same-visit for us when you book. The usual way homeowners find us: they hear something sliding on the roof during a windstorm, or a home inspector flags a missing cap before closing, or they notice rust stains running down the chimney chase and realize the cap has been failing quietly for a year.
If you already own the Gelco cap and just need it mounted, our labor for a straightforward one-story roof install runs $180 – $260. If you need the cap plus hardware plus install, the total lands in that $275 – $540 window above. We’ll give you a written price before anything goes on the roof. No measuring-and-then-adding-later surprises.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco caps come in two main lines you’ll see most often in Fresno: the standard single-flue cap (fits 6″ – 13″ round or square clay flue tiles) and the multi-flue or custom chase-top cap, which covers the entire chimney crown on masonry or prefab chases. The model number is usually stamped on the underside of the cap skirt or on the mounting collar. If it’s weathered off, measure the outside dimensions of your flue tile and the inside dimensions of your flue opening. Those two numbers tell us which cap fits correctly.
One compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in Fresno: older homes near the Tower District with 8″×8″ clay flue tiles occasionally have a drift in tile size. Not every tile is a true 8×8. Some run just under, and the cap’s inside mounting collar won’t grab a flue tile that’s undersized. When that happens, an adapter plate solves the gap rather than trying to shim it, which fails within a season. We carry Gelco and Gelco-compatible hardware, plus DuraFlex and HeatShield parts on the truck for jobs where the cap replacement uncovers liner work underneath. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, and we’re comfortable saying what matters is the fit and the stainless steel grade, not the logo on the skirt.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney chase or brick. Gelco caps are typically stainless or galvanized. Galvanized caps in Fresno’s hot, dry summers and damp winters start showing rust at weld points within 5 – 7 years. The rust streaks are cosmetic now but mean the cap’s protective coating is gone and the metal is exposed.
- You hear a metallic rattle or sliding sound in high wind. The mounting bolts or bracket have loosened. A loose cap can act like a lever in wind gusts, and enough cycles of that will crack the flue tile or damage the crown. We’ve seen this after the Santa Ana-adjacent wind events that push through the Central Valley in fall.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney chase or a damp smell in the firebox. The cap’s rain-shield or its silicone bead at the collar has failed. Water is bypassing the cap and entering the flue or chase. This is the failure that quietly becomes a $2,000 crown or liner repair if ignored through one more wet season.
- Birds, raccoons, or nesting material inside the flue. The screen mesh on the cap has torn or the cap has shifted, leaving a gap. Fresno’s spring season is when we find dried grass and twig nests packed into flues that had a failed cap all winter.
- Soot or creosote accumulation faster than normal. A cap with a damaged spark-arrestor screen or wrong-sized hood changes the flue’s draft. Poor draft means slower smoke exit, which means faster creosote buildup inside the flue. If you’re noticing more smoke rollback into the room when starting a fire, the cap is part of the diagnosis.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest pricing picture for Fresno. A basic Gelco-compatible single-flue stainless cap, mounted on a one-story roof with good ladder access, runs $275 – $370. A larger dome or multi-flue cap on a two-story home with a steep pitch runs $420 – $540. If the old mounting bracket is reusable and in good shape, we use it and you save about $40 – $60. If the crown needs a small patch or the flue tile edge needs cleanup before mounting, that adds $50 – $90. We’ll tell you before we do it, never after.
Every installation includes a written price before work starts, a written guarantee on the repair for 365 days from completion, and a free return visit if anything fails within that year. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s included. It’s not an upsell. If you need the cap replaced and we installed it, the part and labor are covered for that full year.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re just identifying the part, you can safely do this from the ground: photograph the cap, check for rust, note whether the mesh is torn, and send us the photos. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means. Ruben Castellano looks at every photo inquiry personally and will tell you whether it’s a straightforward cap swap or something that can wait.
Where DIY goes wrong is the roof. Chimney cap installation means working at roof height, often on a pitch, while handling a metal cap that catches wind like a sail. One wrong move with a drill on a steep Fresno two-story roof, and you’re not saving $200. You’re calling an ambulance. Ladder safety, roof slope, and flue access are the exact things that make this a professional job. We’d rather see you on the ground with a phone than on a roof with a drill. If you’re unsure whether your cap is even the problem, call us at (559) 215-1714 and describe what you see. We’ll tell you straight what’s actually going on.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco or Gelco-compatible cap in the Central Valley climate typically lasts 10 – 15 years before rust or weld failure, while a galvanized version lasts 5 – 7. Fresno’s hard water and wind-driven grit accelerate wear on galvanized coatings specifically. If your cap is over ten years old and showing rust at the welds, replacement now costs a few hundred dollars. Waiting until it fully fails can add a crown or liner repair. Call (559) 215-1714 and we’ll give you a straight assessment based on photos.
Sometimes, and we’ll tell you honestly. Small tears in the mesh screen can be patched, and loose mounting bolts can often be tightened and re-sealed. But rust at the welds, a bent rain-shield, or a cracked mounting collar are structurally done, and a repair won’t hold another Fresno wind season. The material cost difference between a repair and a replacement cap is usually small enough that replacement is the smarter call. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you which situation you’re in.
A standard single-flue Gelco cap installation on a one-story Fresno home takes about 45 – 75 minutes from ladder up to cleaned-up. A two-story or steep-pitch roof runs 1.5 – 2 hours. If we uncover crown damage or a failed liner during the job, we stop and show you what we found on our camera before recommending anything. No hidden add-ons, and the written price you approved before we start is the price you pay unless you approve a change in writing.
We stock Gelco-compatible caps, mounting brackets, and adapter plates on the truck in the most common Fresno flue sizes: 8×8, 8×13, 13×13, and round 6″ – 8″. If your flue is an uncommon size or you want a specific Gelco finish, we’ll source it and schedule the install once it’s in, usually within a few days. We also carry DuraFlex and HeatShield parts on the truck for jobs where a cap failure is a symptom of a bigger flue issue, so one visit usually handles the whole picture.
