Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install Famco chimney caps across Fresno, and a full replacement with parts and labor typically runs $260 – $520 depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the old cap is seized. Most Famco cap installations in the Fresno area are completed the same week we come out to measure. You’ll usually know the cap has failed because you’re hearing it rattle against the flue on windy nights, seeing rust trails down the chimney chase, or finding bird noise coming through the firebox. Sometimes it’s simpler than that: the cap is simply gone after a big spring storm, and the open flue is now inviting rain, bats, and wasps straight into the house.
If you already have a Famco cap that’s failing, the good news is you don’t need to guess at the model. We’ll measure the flue tile, identify what you have, and give you one written price before any work starts. Call us at (559) 215-1714 and we’ll set a time to look at it.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Most Fresno homes with a genuine Famco cap have either the Famco MSC (multi-flue or single-flue stainless cap), the Famco ECS (external mount cap for larger flues), or the older Famco SC / RC series that sat directly over a single clay tile. The biggest compatibility gotcha we run into in Fresno is lid sizing: Famco caps are sold by the outside dimensions of the flue tile, not the cap’s top surface area. A homeowner will measure the old lid, order what looks right, and end up with a cap that doesn’t clamp onto the tile at all.
Here’s the honest parts conversation: for a basic single-flue cap, a quality aftermarket stainless cap with the right screen mesh and clamp design works fine, and we keep several common sizes on the truck. But when the existing chimney has a Famco extended-height base or a draft-increasing design, we recommend staying with the matching Famco part. The mounting collar and screen dimensions on those are specific to the series, and a universal-fit cap rarely seats correctly. Alcott Chimney Fresno is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco, which means we can install the right Famco part when it matters and a solid equivalent when it doesn’t, without pushing a brand for the sake of it.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rattling or scraping when the wind picks up. The cap’s collar was clamped to the flue tile years ago, and in Fresno’s wet winters plus hot, dry summers, that clamp loosens. What you’re hearing is the cap pivoting on a rusted band, and it’s wearing against the tile every time it moves.
- Rust streaks down the chimney chase or siding. The galvanized base on older Famco caps eventually gives out, especially in an area where fog or dry-season dust settles and holds moisture. Once you see streaks, the base is compromised and the screen is behind it.
- Bird activity in the flue or firebox. Fresno’s spring starling and swallow pressure is real. A breached or lifted screen lets birds in fast, and a nest inside a flue is both a fire load and a carbon monoxide restriction until it’s pulled out.
- Rain or drip marks around the damper after a storm. A cap that’s shifted or lost its seal lets water follow the flue walls down. What you see at the damper is only the part you can see; the rest of that water is soaking the masonry above the smoke shelf.
- The cap is missing entirely. We’ve arrived at homes where the spring wind took it clean off and the homeowner found it in the yard a week later, folded in half. Without the cap, the flue is open to everything Fresno weather and wildlife can throw at it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fresno, a Famco chimney cap replacement lands in these ranges for most single-family homes:
- Basic single-flue stainless cap (supplied and installed): $260 – $340
- Famco-branded cap with extended-height base or draft ring: $360 – $480
- Large multi-flue or custom-width cap, including new mounting hardware: $440 – $520
What moves the price is the cap size, the roof pitch and ladder setup, and whether the old cap’s clamp has seized, which means grinding or cutting it free. We give you one written price before the work starts and that price doesn’t budge at the end of the job. Every cap installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year of the install date, the return visit and repair are free. We also inspect the flue interior while we’re on the roof, because a failed cap is often the first sign of corrosion higher up that you’d never see from the ground.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: look at the cap from the ground with binoculars, note the flue tile dimensions if you can reach the roof safely from an interior access, and listen for that wind-driven rattle. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means. Ruben Castellano has pulled apart enough seized Famco installations that we can usually tell you over the phone what you’re likely looking at.
What we don’t recommend is the roof walk itself. Chimney cap work in greater Fresno means standing on whatever the roof is doing that season: hot tile in summer, slick composition after a drizzle, or a second-story pitch near the city’s northeast edge where one slip puts you in serious trouble. The cap also sits at the chimney’s highest point, and lifting a rusted one off a clay tile while balancing next to a flue is a two-man job with the right ladder setup. We bring the cap, the hardware, and the harness. If you’d rather watch from the yard, we respect that.

FAQs
Stainless Famco caps last 12 to 20 years in the Fresno area depending on exposure. Galvanized-base models often show failing by year 8 to 10 due to Central Valley fog and dry-season heat cycling. If you’re replacing a galvanized cap that’s ten years old and rusted through, stepping up to stainless gets closer to two decades of service. Call (559) 215-1714 and we’ll tell you what you have and what’s actually left in it.
Sometimes. If the screen is torn but the base and collar are solid, we can repair or replace the mesh and extend the cap’s life. If the mounting collar is rusted or the base has pulled away from the flue, replacement is the honest call, and we’ll show you why before you spend anything. We stock Famco-compatible caps, plus parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco for the rest of the chimney system.
Plan for 45 minutes to an hour and a half for a standard single-flue replacement. A seized base or a larger multi-flue cap adds time, and we’ll tell you before we start. You don’t need to leave the house; we just need a safe place to set the ladder. Call (559) 215-1714 for an exact time frame on your roof.
We keep the most common Famco-compatible sizes on our trucks, and Fresno is close enough to our suppliers that specialty sizes rarely take more than a couple of business days. When you call, we’ll ask for the flue tile’s outer measurements and tell you whether it’s a truck-stock item or a quick order. Either way, the installed quote is the same.
