Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We install HeatShield chimney cap systems in Fresno every week, and the installed price typically runs $225 to $480 depending on the flue size and cap style. Most installations take under two hours, and we keep common HeatShield cap sizes on the truck so we can often do the swap the same day we diagnose the problem. The way most Fresno homeowners find out their cap has failed is either water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, a rust-colored drip on the firebox floor, or birds that have turned the flue into a seasonal rental. If you’re seeing any of that, the cap is the first thing we check.
Alcott Chimney Fresno is an independent service provider and not affiliated with HeatShield. We do, however, install and service their cap systems routinely and know which parts hold up in Central Valley weather and which ones don’t.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes cap and chase cover systems that pair with their ceramic resurfacing products, and the compatibility question is where we see the most confusion. The cap has to match the flue tile dimensions, not the HeatShield coating that was applied inside the flue. We measure the outside flue tile before recommending a cap, because two chimneys on the same Fresno street can differ by half an inch and the cap either won’t seat or will rattle in any real wind.
If you still have the original paperwork from the HeatShield job, look for the series code on the cap itself. Most Fresno homes we service have either a standard single-flue cap or a multi-flue cap if there’s a furnace vent sharing the chase. We’re happy to match an existing HeatShield cap by model if it’s legible, but honestly, two-thirds of the caps we replace are so weathered the stamping is gone. That’s when measurements matter more than brand labels.
We stock HeatShield-compatible caps in the common Central Valley sizes: 8×8, 8×13, 13×13, and 8×17 stainless steel lids with either a 24-gauge or 22-gauge screen mesh. If you have an oddball size or a multi-flue configuration, we order direct and it’s usually a three to five business day turnaround in Fresno.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. This usually means the cap’s mounting collar has pulled loose or the sealant at the base has cracked, letting rain run down the flue exterior instead of being shed outward.
- Rust drips inside the firebox after a storm. The cap’s stainless lid can outlast its hardware. When the fasteners corrode, the lid shifts and water tracks straight down into the firebox.
- Bird noise or nesting material visible from the hearth. A torn or bent screen mesh is an open door. In Fresno, starlings and sparrows will find a dime-sized hole and take it as an invitation.
- Smoke backing into the room on a low-burn fire. A cap that’s warped by Central Valley summer heat can restrict the draft just enough that smoke hangs instead of lifting. We see this most on west-facing caps that get the full afternoon sun.
- Debris falling into the firebox when it’s windy. If the cap’s mesh has gaps or the lid has lifted, wind-driven pine needles and leaf litter from Fresno’s older tree-lined neighborhoods end up on your firebox floor.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A HeatShield-compatible chimney cap replacement in Fresno runs $225 to $480 installed, and that range covers parts and labor with a written price handed to you before any work starts. The cap itself is typically $90 to $220 of that total depending on size, so a standard 13×13 single-flue with stainless mesh lands at the lower end, while an 8×17 or a multi-flue setup is at the higher end.
Every cap we install includes new mounting hardware and high-temperature sealant, and the work is backed by our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap loosens, lifts, or leaks within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. We don’t charge travel fees within the Fresno metro, and we’re not going to surprise you with a line item for “shop supplies” or “disposal.” The price on the sheet is the price you pay.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and you can safely access the roof, you can measure the outside flue tile and check the cap for visible damage. A photo of the cap from above, plus the flue tile measurements, is genuinely useful to us when you call. But we don’t recommend swapping a chimney cap yourself on most Fresno roofs. Tile roofs are slick, older craftsman homes near the Tower District have steep pitches, and the sealant bond between the cap base and the crown is the difference between a cap that lasts five years and one that fails in two.
More importantly, if the cap failed because the flue tile underneath is spalling or the crown is cracked, a new cap just sits on top of the problem. We can tell the difference and show you photos of what we’re seeing before we ever quote a repair. Call us at (559) 215-1714 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing from the ground before we ever schedule a visit.
FAQs
A properly installed stainless cap typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Fresno, but the hardware and sealant usually need attention after 7 or 8. The Central Valley sun and wind cycle take a toll, and it’s usually the fasteners that fail before the cap itself does.
Yes, sometimes. If the lid is still solid and the screen mesh has small tears, we can often repair the mesh and re-seal the base for less than half of a full replacement. If the lid is warped or the mounting collar has corroded through, replacement is the honest answer, and we can show you exactly why with photos before you decide. Call (559) 215-1714 for a free estimate.
Most single-flue cap installations take 60 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. We’ll need roof access and enough room to set up a ladder safely, and we’ll put down a drop cloth at the hearth to catch any debris that falls during the swap.
We stock the most common HeatShield-compatible cap sizes on the truck and can often install the same day. If you have a non-standard size, we order direct and it’s usually three to five business days to Fresno. We’ll give you the timeline in writing before you commit.
