Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
Olympia Chimney chimney cap installation in Fresno typically runs $340 – $680 installed, and we stock the most common Olympia chimney cap sizes on our trucks so the job is usually done in a single visit. Most owners discover the cap failed when they find rust flakes in the firebox, hear a loose metal rattle in the wind, or notice water staining on the ceiling near the chase. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means. If the cap is letting rain in, it isn’t a cosmetic issue, it’s a slow leak into the flue liner and the framing around the chase.
We’re an independent chimney service company, not a division of Olympia Chimney, but we specify and install their caps regularly because the stainless builds hold up in Fresno’s sun-and-smog cycle better than most big-box equivalents.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney builds caps that pair with their stainless steel chimney systems, most commonly the Ventis line, and the cap you need depends on whether you have a round flue or an air-cooled chase-top system. The round-flue caps slip over the exposed pipe and lock with a set screw. The chase-top versions drop onto the square metal housing at the roofline and get screwed into the chase pan. If you have an oval or rectangular flue, Olympia’s universal caps fit, but they need to be sized off the outside diameter of the liner, not the interior.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into in Fresno all the time: a Ventis air-cooled chase cover has an opening cut for the specific pipe diameter, and a cap for a 6-inch round flue will not properly seal an 8-inch chase opening. Before you order anything, check the metal tag on the pipe or measure across the top of the flue tile or liner at its widest point. If you’re unsure, call us and describe what you see; we’ll tell you whether it’s a round-cap job or a chase-top-cap job before we even schedule the visit.
We install Olympia caps as OEM when the chimney system is Olympia, and we also stock quality aftermarket stainless lids for older systems where the Olympia-specific cap is no longer made. Either way, the cap gets mechanically fastened, not glued.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the chase or pipe. This is usually the cap’s welded seams letting go after years of Fresno’s high-UV exposure. Once the seam splits, water follows the weld line down and the cap rusts from the inside.
- A rattling or grinding sound when the wind blows. The set screw or mounting brackets have loosened and the cap is vibrating against the flue. Left alone, the movement widens the gap and the cap can lift off entirely in a strong San Joaquin gust.
- Water or damp staining on the ceiling near the fireplace. A bad cap lets rain fall straight down the flue. By the time it shows on the drywall, the leak has usually been running for months.
- Debris inside the firebox: leaves, twig pieces, or bird nesting material. That means the cap’s mesh screen is torn or the cap is warped enough to leave a gap. Birds will absolutely build in a Fresno chimney by March if the mesh is breached.
- A sulfur or fireplace-ash smell in the room after rain. Water mixing with old creosote and soot produces that sharp, damp-ash odor, which means moisture is getting in at the top and pooling inside the smoke shelf.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard round-flue Olympia chimney cap installation in Fresno, you’re looking at $340 – $480 including the part and labor. A chase-top cap runs $480 – $680 depending on the size of the chase and whether the chase pan itself needs re-sealing. The range is driven by the cap style, the flue diameter, and whether we need to replace the mounting hardware that’s corroded along with the cap.
Every quote includes the cap, the mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, a quick visual check of the exposed flue while we’re on the roof, and the written labor guarantee. That guarantee is part of our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap installation fails within a year, the second visit is free. You get the written price before any work starts, and nothing gets added at the end.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnostic part yourself. Look at the top of the chimney from the ground: is the cap still there, is it sitting level, and can you see rust or daylight coming through any seams? If you have a chase cover, check whether it’s pulling away from the roofline at the corners. Those observations are genuinely useful when we quote the job.
Where DIY goes wrong is the roof work. Fresno rooflines, especially on the older concrete-tile roofs in the Tower District and surrounding neighborhoods, are brittle underfoot, and a cap swap requires being at the very edge of the flue while handling a deck screw and a power driver. If you’re not comfortable on a ladder with tools in hand, don’t make this your first roofing project. The cap itself is not a high-tension part, but falling off a roof is a permanent failure. Call (559) 215-1714 and we’ll handle the climb. Estimates are free.
FAQs
A stainless Olympia cap will typically last 10 to 15 years in Fresno’s climate before the seams or the mounting holes become the failure point. The Fresno Valley’s triple-digit summer heat and high UV index damage the screen mesh and the fasteners faster than the steel body itself, so you may be replacing hardware before the cap is actually worn out. Call us for an inspection and we’ll tell you what’s still serviceable.
In most cases, no. If the mesh screen is torn but the frame is intact, we can sometimes replace just the screen on a round cap. However, once the welded seam between the cap lid and the base has split, the cap is done. Welding a used stainless cap on a Fresno rooftop costs more than a new cap, and the repair is never as clean as factory. We’ll show you the seam damage before recommending replacement.
Most Olympia chimney cap installations in Fresno take about an hour, including removal of the old cap, inspection of the mounting surface, and installation of the new hardware. If the old cap is rusted onto the flue or the chase pan needs re-sealing, add another 30 to 45 minutes. We carry the common cap sizes on the truck, so in most cases it’s a one-visit job.
We stock the common Olympia round-flue caps and stainless aftermarket equivalents in the sizes we see most often on Fresno homes. For larger chase-top caps or oval configurations, we order from our suppliers and typically have the part in hand within a few days. If you call with your model and measurements, we can tell you before the visit whether it’s a stock item or a special order.
